So you have had an accident but you're uninsured? What now?

Did you know the average claim size is upwards of $4000? That’s before we even consider the damage to your car.

But that doesn’t take into other factors such as who is at fault, if the costs are even fair and ways in which you can make repayments.

Accidents aren’t something that happen every day and many people don’t understand how the process works. Insurance companies on the other hand have full time staff dedicated to recouping money, often at the expense of the uninsured driver.

So what happens when you have an accident and you're uninsured?

If the other driver has insurance, they will contact their insurer and who will arrange a quote to take place at one of their preferred repair shops. Many people think multiple quotes are required, or that they will get a say in the repairer – this isn’t the case.

Insurance companies simply pick a repairer and obtain a quote. There are no requirements to get multiple quotes and there is no requirements to let you have a say in what repairer they go to.

Do you get to see the quote first?

Not necessarily. Once they have obtained and approved a quote the insurer will let their client book a time to get the repairs done, no contact with you needed.

The first you could see of this quote is when you receive a bill in the mail demanding you pay the full price of repairs plus other costs, such as tow and hire car fees, within 14 days or they could take legal action.

Don't think you did all that damage?

If their assessor says it’s ok, that’s what they will stick to. Pre-existing damage could get swept up in repair costs, unreasonable time taken to do repairs - these are all issues that insurers will raise with each other that an uninsured driver does not have expertise in.

But it wasn't even your fault?

Immediately following the accident you may get a call from the insurer to check liability. They will ask your version of events and maybe have you fill in one of their forms in an effort to hold you liable. They won’t discuss how sometimes both parties can be at fault, or that fault can sometimes be apportioned depending on how the incident occurred.

Sound fair?

Not at all; and that’s why we exist.

We understand the process from the very first step and can represent you to ensure you are not paying more than what you’re meant to.

Many uninsured drivers don’t know the process and don't realise that they have been pushed into a situation until it’s too late.

We can be there from the first call, representing you to ensure the best outcome for you. We can provide an assessment of who is at fault and understand how to negotiate that with the insurer. We can review repair costs, and we can work out ways you can reduce what you pay and when you pay it.
